Summer means those warm temperatures. And with those warm temperatures comes mosquitoes. And with those mosquitoes come mosquito bites. And with those mosquito bites comes itching. And that’s just annoying. 😉
You can get mosquito bites anywhere. Maybe you’re out running in the evening, out hiking the trails near a swamp, or gone for a weekend camping trip. Or maybe you didn’t even leave home and you’re hanging out in your yard or on your porch!
Unfortunately, even if you take precautions, you can end up with mosquito bites.
And there are a few home remedies for when you do get bug bites from those pesky insects. Among those natural remedies include essential oils for mosquito bites, which can also work for bug bites in general. Essential oils can be from herbs, plants, flowers, and trees.
It is always best to not apply essential oils in its pure form directly to your skin. Instead, you can dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil so it won’t be as concentrated.
When you are off for your weekend camping trip, it could be good to add on your camping checklist one of these essential oils for in case you do need to treat a bug bite! Just make sure that you bring along the diluted version of the essential oil as your mosquito bite treatment so you can use it immediately when you need it!

What essential oils are good for mosquito bites?
1. Lavender
Lavender essential oil is a good one for if you have a spot on your body that is extremely itchy. Keep in mind not all insect bites will make themselves known right away. When you have an itch, try mixing lavender essential oil with a carrier oil, such as jojoba oil or fractionated coconut oil, then apply it to the bite. Do this for all bites and itchy spots, and hopefully this will bring you some relief!
2. Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus is an essential oil that has benefits physically and mentally, as one of the essential oils that can help with anxiety and skin conditions. It can also be a good choice when you have burns, cuts, and scrapes, or other types of bug bites. It can soothe the bite so that the itching and burning isn’t quite as severe, which is really what you want when you have a bug bite that is bothering you! You may also consider applying eucalyptus essential oil to your skin with a carrier oil before going outside to repel certain insects.
3. Tea Tree
One of the best essential oils for your skin is tea tree oil. Many people use this oil for extra moisture and to help get rid of scars. It also can work well when you have a bug bite or insect bite. Tea tree oil is good for boosting your immune system, which can help reduce the overall effect of being bitten by certain types of bugs. Once again, make sure you dilute the tea tree essential oil.
Herbal ice cubes for mosquito bites
You may have heard about applying ice cubes to help with your mosquito bites. There are people who find this effective. They find relief because what’s happening is that the cold temperatures of ice cubes reduces the swelling and inflammation caused by the bug bites. If you have a running injury, you can think of applying ice to bug bites as the same concept of applying ice to your knee pain or shin splints — to reduce inflammation.
But the next time you have a mosquito bite and you’re looking to treat it with ice cubes, add a little bit of extra healing properties to your ice cubes!
How?
Make them into chamomile ice cubes or lavender ice cubes!
And how do you make herbal ice cubes for mosquito bites?
1. Brew tea from chamomile tea leaves or lavender tea leaves. Chamomile and lavender are among the herbs that have extra healing properties. You can brew the tea by adding near boiling water directly to the tea leaves by using a tea pot with a strainer to make less tea or a tea maker with a strainer to make more tea.
2. Pour a cup for yourself to drink. 😉
3. Set aside the rest of the tea to wait for it to cool down.
4. Pour the tea into an ice cube tray. Using a popsicle mold instead of a standard ice cube tray will make it so you can have a handle to apply the ice to your skin without freezing your fingers!
5. FREEZE!
Of course, this requires you to prepare the ice cubes ahead of time.
It’s not like you come back home from a weekend of camping (where you totally made camp pizza 😉 ), have all these mosquito bites you weren’t expecting (because you totally took precautions with a portable mosquito repeller 😉 ), and then can prepare your ice cubes in 5 minutes on-the-spot when you need them.
Once it starts to become mosquito season, you may want to have some of the herbal ice cubes on hand at home for when you’ll need them so that you can have them ready to go when you need them!
HAPPY MOSQUITO SEASON! 😉

🐠 Here are things you must consider packing!
- Swimsuit or swimming shirt aka rash guard
- rash guard: swim set for women and swim shirt for men
- Water shoes
- Waterproof phone case (so you can capture pictures of fishies underwater!)
- cheapo phone case OR waterproof camera
- I also have this "camera" wrist float to attach to my cheapo waterproof phone case so my phone won't sink to the bottom of the ocean in case I somehow let go of it. (Mine does stay afloat - test this for yourself before completely trusting it!)
- Swimming goggles or snorkeling mask set
- Reef-safe(r) sunscreen
- lightweight travel towel:
- walking sandals:
I also don't go snorkeling without a personal swim float buoy. Not only does it help to keep me visible, but it makes for a perfect way to rest out in deeper water! Oh, and it also serves as a dry bag so I can take stuff into the water with me.
Another way I have taken valuables into the water with me is to wear a travel money belt that I don't mind getting wet with salt water (it's not waterproof but I have several so I just use one of them) and then I put things in a ziplock freezer bag, and put that freezer bag in the money belt.
There are also designated waterproof waist pouches that you can store your valuables and take into the water with you.
