So, if you’re going to Hawaii in the summer like during the June, July, or August months, you might be conflicted about what to wear on your flight to Hawaii.
On the one hand, you’re leaving from a warm weather location and you’re going to a warm weather destination.
But on the other hand… to get between those places… it’s COLD!
That would be the plane.
Although this might also depend on your tolerance for cold.
But generally…
Planes are cold
So while you may be tempted to wear your summer Hawaiian outfit to the airport so you can arrive in style to Hawaii… you know, like one of these Hawaiian outfits for couples to attract attention ;), you may not want to do that so you can be comfortable on the plane.
And if you’re headed to Hawaii during the cold weather months like December, January, or February, do you really want to drag your warm puffy winter jacket through the airport once you land in Hawaii and onto the streets?

What should you wear on a flight to Hawaii?!
Well of course people have different preferences.
Like there are lots of people who like these kinds of neck pillows on longer flights.
Here’s the quick list of what to wear on a flight to Hawaii:
- Wear your long clothes onto the plane instead of packing them
- Long-sleeve shirt and/or light jacket
- Yoga pants or linen pants
- Packable down jacket that you can make small once in Hawaii
- Wear close-toed shoes, or hiking sandals with a pair of long wool socks (because you’ll be hiking in Hawaii for sure ;))
- Compression socks to encourage circulation during the long flight

Now…
Instead of packing your warmest clothes in your suitcase, wear them!
DON’T wear short shorts!
If you are prone to getting cold easily, wearing short shorts is an easy way to get cold on your flight real quick!
You might be able to get away with it on a flight that’s 1-2 hours long, but once your flight starts to get longer (like when you’re flying across the Pacific Ocean), it can start to get cold.
If you’re planning on taking jeans with you to Hawaii, make sure they are the most comfortable pair you have, and then wear them onto the plane.
If you’re not planning on taking jeans, consider wearing some other form of long pants onto your flight to Hawaii. Here are some comfortable capris.

Wear your long sleeve shirts
If you’re planning on taking a light jacket with you to Hawaii, don’t pack it in your suitcase. Wear it onto the plane. The same thing goes for any long sleeve shirts that were going to end up in your luggage. Wearing these clothes can also free up space in your luggage! Win-win. 😉

And if you weren’t planning on taking a light jacket or long sleeve shirt… well, add it to your Hawaii packing list! You might end up with a slightly breezy evening in Hawaii, even in June or July, so it’s good to have just in case.
If you’ll be flying to Hawaii from cold weather in the winter months, you may consider getting a packable down jacket like one of these. You might be able to find a packable down jacket at Costco for $20 if it’s in season.
Wearing this kind of jacket will allow you to get you from your home to the airport in the winter while keeping you protected against the cold temperatures, and you won’t have to hold a heavy and hot jacket once you’re in your destination with hot weather.
Once you get outside the airport and are exposed to those hot temperatures, the last thing you’ll want is to be carrying around a heavy winter jacket!
Packable jackets can scrunch up to be relatively small, so once your plane lands in Hawaii, you can pack it away in your backpack or suitcase easily. Having this kind of jacket will also make it so you don’t have to worry as much about being too cold when you’re flying.
DON’T wear flip flops
Well, wear these very aloha sandals if you insist. 😉
But because your flight could be on the chilly side, you might not want to expose your feet and toes to those cold temperatures.
If you have no plans for hiking in Hawaii, or you’ll be wearing hiking sandals like these on the trails, eliminating the need to take any shoes at all, well, there is one thing you want to make sure you wear on your flight to Hawaii then…
SOCKS!
Covering your feet fully in socks and shoes would be the best option to keep your feet warm.
But the next best option when you just don’t want to take shoes with you to Hawaii is to make sure you pack some socks in your carry-on luggage. Then, when you get on your flight, you can put on a pair (or two) of long wool socks like these, sit back, relax, and be happy that your feet are cozy. 😉
Even if you’re wearing shoes, you might want to consider either wearing or taking some warm socks.

- Water shoes
- Waterproof phone case (so you can capture pictures of fishies underwater!)
- cheapo phone case OR waterproof camera
- I also have this "camera" wrist float to attach to my cheapo waterproof phone case so my phone won't sink to the bottom of the ocean in case I somehow let go of it. (Mine does stay afloat - test this for yourself before completely trusting it!)
- Swimming goggles or snorkeling mask set
- Reef-safe(r) sunscreen

I also don't go snorkeling without a personal swim float buoy. Not only does it help to keep me visible, but it makes for a perfect way to rest out in deeper water! Oh, and it also serves as a dry bag so I can take stuff into the water with me.
Another way I have taken valuables into the water with me is to wear a travel money belt that I don't mind getting wet with salt water (it's not waterproof but I have several so I just use one of them) and then I put things in a ziplock freezer bag, and put that freezer bag in the money belt.
There are also designated waterproof waist pouches that you can store your valuables and take into the water with you.
