ALOHA!
New to Waikiki in 2017 is the option to rent a bike in a super easy and convenient way!
Bike sharing has been introduced to Hawaii in the areas of Waikiki and downtown Honolulu.
With the way that the bike sharing system is set up, it’s ideal for short trips around town to get from point A to point B.
There are over 100 bike rental stations set up around Waikiki and Honolulu. It’s designed so that:
- You rent a bike at one bike station
- You ride your bike down the street to another part of town
- You return the bike at another bike station at your destination
It’s $3.50 for 30 minutes, and there are options to purchase time as a package.
This bike sharing can be convenient for locals, and visitors can get in on the Waikiki biking action too!
Renting a bike from a biki bike station can be pretty simple!

Where to ride if you want to bike in Waikiki for just 30 minutes?
So, let’s say you think it’ll be fun to try out a short bike ride in Waikiki! Where should you go?!
Bike along the coast, of course! 😉
So first…

Where to rent your bike in Waikiki
For this 30 minute trip, the bike share station on Kalakaua Ave near Paoakalani Ave or on Kalakaua Ave near Ohua Ave would be good places to rent a bike.
Kalakaua Avenue is the street that runs alongside Waikiki Beach.
You can remember this more easily by thinking of them as the bike stations on the road that runs along Waikiki Beach that’s closest to the Honolulu Zoo and the park.
The park is called Kapiolani Park.
These bike stations are pretty close to the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort, Aston Waikiki Beach, and Hyatt Place Waikiki Beach.
You can further explore the map of bike rental stations around Waikiki and Honolulu by exploring this map here, or through the biki app by searching “biki hawaii” or “bikeshare hawaii” in your app store.
Directions for your short Waikiki bike ride
Then from the bike station, you can get on the road in the bike lane on Kalakaua Avenue.
Once you get to an intersection in which there’s a split in the road in a non-traditional way, you can get yourself on the sidewalk.
It’s around this area that the main part of Waikiki ends, along with the crowded streets, so you should be okay. (But as always, bike at your own risk!)
For the visual, you will go in the direction where there’s a big tree with a thick trunk. This is one of the many banyan trees on Oahu.
Then, start biking on the coastal sidewalk!
Take your time and enjoy the views!
On one side of the sidewalk is the ocean, and on the other side is a park.
As you’re biking along, you might find some people getting a surfing lesson or stand-up paddleboard lesson, taking part in group yoga, or even getting some lessons in scuba diving!
You will also almost certainly see some runners and walkers too.
Basically, you will see an active Waikiki!
You’ll also pass by an area that’s one of the best spots for snorkeling near Waikiki.
Keep biking until you reach the end of the sidewalk
If you started your bike rental at one of the bike stations listed above, you’ll likely reach the end of the sidewalk within 10-12 minutes if you go at a casual pace with a stop or two for pictures.
This will depend on your actual speed, but biking at a leisurely pace will likely work out as long as you don’t make tons of stops.
This will give you the same amount of time to get back to a bike share station.
But keep an eye on the time so that you don’t go over your time limit.
If you’re approaching 15 minutes before reaching the end of the sidewalk, it might be time to turn around.
If you do go over the 30 minutes, you’ll be charged another $3.50 for an extra 30 minutes.
The actual distance one way is about half a mile, so round-trip is about a mile. See the Waikiki map here with this bike route.
Another Waikiki bike ride
For another bike route, if you don’t mind riding in the bike lane on Kalakaua Avenue, you may also consider biking from one end of Waikiki to the other.
To do this, you would start near the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
There is a bike rental station near the Hilton Hawiian Village Ali’s Tower at the end of Paoa Place.
Explore the map of bike rental stations. From there, you’ll bike to reach Kalakaua Avenue.
Then from there, you can bike all the way through Waikiki parallel to Waikiki Beach!
This will be 1.5 – 2 miles, and because you’ll be biking on the road, you’ll probably be going a little faster than the other bike route.
As you approach your time limit, you can simply return your bike at any bike station you come across.
You will pass many bike stations going down Kalakaua Avenue.
