If you’re flying to your cruise embarkation port, you not only might worry about your bags going missing from the airplane, you might also worry about your bags going missing from the cruise ship. (If you’re a worrying type of person.)

Well, you really shouldn’t be too worried about either since both don’t happen too frequently, but sometimes we just can’t help but worry.

The good news about lost luggage on a cruise ship is that it’s most likely somewhere on the cruise ship and not left behind at the cruise port!

But still, you don’t want your luggage to be even more delayed in getting to your room on the first day of your cruise.

And you probably don’t want to spend the first evening of your cruise in the long line at the guest services desk or at the lost and found.

So that’s why you’ll want to get these tag holders for each piece of luggage you’re taking with you on the cruise!

Printing your luggage tags from home

Cruise lines will have you to print off luggage tags at home and place them on your bags or suitcases yourself.

These are the cruise equivalent of the tags that airline agents attach to your suitcase when you go to check in your bags at the airport.

When you fly, you pick up your own luggage from the baggage claim conveyor belt.

When you cruise, your luggage is hand-delivered straight to your room by cruise staff.

The luggage tags are how cruise staff know where to deliver the carts full of suitcases to.

So they are kind of important to have on your suitcase and, more importantly, to stay on your suitcase.

So, what’s the best way to prevent your checked bags from going missing on a cruise ship?

One big reason your suitcase may not get delivered to your room is if the cruise staff don’t know what room to deliver it to!

But you put your printed off luggage tags on your suitcase, so why would they not know where to deliver your suitcase to?

Well, what’s the difference between the tags that the airline agents place on your flying suitcase, and the tags you place by yourself on your sailing suitcase?

The paper you are printing your luggage tags off on at home is far less durable than the material used at the airport.

And with all the stacking and moving of suitcases onto the trolley at the cruise port and on the cruise ship, the paper luggage tags become susceptible to ripping and tearing and completely coming off your suitcase.

That’s as good as not having ever placed the paper luggage tag on at all.

This means that it would be helpful if you can put the luggage tag on in a way that will keep it in good condition.

So, what’s the best thing you can you do to make your luggage tag durable to avoid lost luggage?

Yup, that’s what these things do! 😉

A popular option is using plastic cruise luggage tag holders to help protect your tags in transit.

These types of holders make your tags much more secure.

They also make the tags much less likely to be torn off.

And with luggage tags that aren’t torn off, that means that you’re much more likely to receive your suitcase to your room in a timely manner!

Luggage tags for a Disney cruise

Note that these types of cruise luggage tag holders tend to not be completely compatible with luggage tags provided when you’re going on a Disney cruise.

You may be able to make it work if you get a little creative.

Here is why the tags don’t work for a Disney cruise and what some people have done.

Otherwise, for Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Celebrity, Holland America, and Norwegian are among the popular cruise lines that they can work out for.

Luggage tags on your carry-on luggage

If you are carrying on a suitcase onto the cruise ship yourself, it’s not necessary to have a luggage tag on it. This is because, in theory, you are the one who is going to be delivering (taking) your suitcase to your own room.

This is “in theory” because what if in all your excitement of embarkation day that you leave your suitcase behind somewhere? In that case, it might not be you who gets your suitcase to your room. 😉

You won’t always be able to go to your room immediately after boarding the cruise ship.

So you’ll be lugging around the suitcase wherever you go, including to go eat. Because of course that’ll be your first stop once you board. 😉

This makes it a good idea to put a luggage tag on all luggage you have (backpacks included!) just in case you do leave something behind. This is good practice in general when you travel by air or by sea.

For items you’re carrying yourself, you don’t have to be as worried about ripped tags since you probably will be careful with your own luggage.

So if you’re flying, you can pick up a couple of the free paper luggage tags for your carry-on luggage at the airlines counter when you get to the airport.

These are the kinds of luggage tags that give you space to write your name, phone number, and other identifying information.

Just don’t forget to add your cruise ship room number (cabin/stateroom) to the tag. That’ll make it easier to identify if your bags do get left behind somewhere on the cruise ship.
