How do you know if you’re going in the right direction?!

Once you’re on the ground, there are a few key things you can look out for to make sure you’re going in the correct direction.

When you get off the cruise ship, you’ll see the famous Atlantis resort in the distance. (Well, you can see it sailing into the port from the cruise ship too!)

But Atlantis is the opposite direction that you want to go. So once you get to the main street, just make sure to go the other way.

And from there, you can follow the coastal path which will take you by the popular bar and restaurant Senor Frog’s. Or you can make your way to downtown on Bay Street and then starting walking in the direction of Junkanoo Beach. Have a look at the map for the visual.

Either way, you will soon come across a big historic looking building, and that means you are going the right way! That’s the British Colonial Hilton Hotel.

And as you make your way past the hotel around the corner, you will soon be at the beach!

Is it safe to walk around in Nassau?

It’s important to mind your surroundings and bearings no matter where in the world you go.

It’s also important to note that the U.S. State Department has issued safety warnings for New Providence Island and Paradise Island in the Bahamas. These islands include the locations of Nassau and Atlantis. These safety and security warnings are due to an increase in violent crimes and robberies against tourists.

This isn’t meant to scare you, but just make you aware! Don’t completely let your guard down just because you’re on vacation.

Is it safe to walk to Junkanoo Beach?

That said!

There’s likely nothing that you’ll feel scared about walking from the Nassau cruise port to Junkanoo Beach. Again, it’s a pretty straight forward walk, and it’s all in an open area.

Add to that, unless you’re one of the first cruise ships to arrive to Nassau, there will likely be tons of people making the same walk as you.

It’s not uncommon for there to be 5 large cruise ships docked at once in Nassau… as well as the occasional yacht.

I also don't go snorkeling without a personal swim float buoy. Not only does it help to keep me visible, but it makes for a perfect way to rest out in deeper water! Oh, and it also serves as a dry bag so I can take stuff into the water with me.

Another way I have taken valuables into the water with me is to wear a travel money belt that I don't mind getting wet with salt water (it's not waterproof but I have several so I just use one of them) and then I put things in a ziplock freezer bag, and put that freezer bag in the money belt.

There are also designated waterproof waist pouches that you can store your valuables and take into the water with you.
